Advent 2011....

For those of you who in the know Advent 2011 began yesterday and this means that the count down for Christmas 2011 has started. Christmas for me is the best time of the year and it wouldn't be the same without music.
One day I will write a Christmas Song - Imagine the PRS lol! If there was one song that I wish I had wrote it would be Slade - I wish it could be Christmas everyday! Wow, I mean imagine how much money that generates every year in Royalties, Christmas compilations seem to be doing the rounds these days and over the past few years have become more popular...

Anyway the count down for Christmas has began.

I shall be attempting to make another Christmas song like I did last year just for a bit of fun but here is what I made earlier, last years festive song by yours truly.

November House Mix

Hello you lovely people. It's quite a while since I have had the time to actually sit down and make a blog. I aimed to upload a house music mix several occasions last month but due to SoundCloud policies and various technicalities I was not able too so I thought while I had the chance I would make one.

My motivation tonight to upload this mix has came from these dark depressing winter nights. I am not particularly a big fan of Sunday nights, especially when Monday morning's are right around the corner...

This is a sample for the people who want to know what I am about musically
So here it is: My November House Mix

RIP Sir Jimmy Saville

So another talent has left us. I'm not going to say much. This man 'fixed' it for a lot of people. He was a legend in is own right and people adored him from all over the land. He was an inspiration for many people and he made many people realise their dreams. He has to be adored.

God bless you Sir Jammy Saville and it warms my heart that you invented the Disco.

Everything You Need To Know About DJing & Success

I have recently equppied myself with the book written for DJs by a DJ.

"Danny Rampling shares his 20 years experience at the top"...

I have only managed to read a few chapters so far but I'll conquer the whole of it soon and what a jolly good read it has been.

I definately recommend reading it. It offers great advice and is packed full of top tips. It is awe inspiring and I can honestly say that it has, already, slightly changed my life. I'm reading it with an open mind but hopefully it will totally change my life!

Already I have changed my thinking and the way I on look on at my DJing aims and DJing ambitions and ambitions in life have totally changed.

I can't wait to read it all.

Thanks Danny Rampling for sharing your knowledge. I have the edition with the 4 Hour DVD, I'll have to get around watching to watch that too.

Everything You Need To Know About DJing & Success is totally worth a read, I am in now way connected to Danny Rampling and nor will I recieve any payment or royalty in praising this book, nor do i have shares in this book but I definately reccommend that all upcoming and aspiring get ahold of this book.

I thought 'How To DJ (Properly): The Art And Science Of Playing Records (Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton)' was amazing. I have standing next to my music making machine, I could be flash and say in my studio but I'll be honest - it's my bedroom...
But everything You Need To Know About DJing & Success is next level. I dare you to arm yourself with a copy and see how it will change your life.

Make em shake it!

I did plan to upload a October house mix today and blog all about it and post about it via Twitter and Facbook and other social networking site but I recieved an email from SoundCloud which said this "..Our automatic content protection system has detected that your upload "Oct house mix" may contain content that is owned or licensed by EMI France.."

So unfortunetly I am not able to share with you my mix that I prepared for the Month of October and because I am only a mere mortal my time was taken up in Sept - I can only tell you how disapointed I am that I am not able to share my music with you at this time but I will have a new mix uploaded for the weekend.

A house music mix that I will be able to upload. A house music mix that I will be able to share. A house music mix that you will be able to download, own and keep.

But until then. Keep it real folks, keep it house!
I do apologise for keeping you all waiting.

Here is a glimpse as to what CD I have in my car - a little insight into my life and music tastes.

A fantastic remix of a house music classic

Club Therapy

Never have lyrics been so true for me. I love this song because it is true. Love the lyrics.

"When I go to a nightclub, you know...I'm not going for the fire that's coming out of the walls, yeah...I'm not going there to be in the VIP area and drink fancy fucking champagne. Nah, I'm not going for none of those reasons to tell you truth, you know...

I'm just going for the music...
I don't need big breaks and a big song with a buildup and lights and smoke... Fuck all that, I don't need none of that shit...
I just need some good music...
I got enough problems on my own man with women and jobs and DJing, making music you know, so when I do go out man I just wanna have a drink and just sit back man and be by myself...

And just nod my head to some good music...

Man, I don't wanna be fucked with all the lights and dressing nice. I'm just a regular guy, you know, who walks into a club and wants to hear a groove. I couldn't give a fuck less about all those girls over there man, I've had girls, man. All different types...
My life ain't gonna change tonight... But yours is..."

Will moombahton be as popular as dubstep?

Just a random thought.... I discovered Moombahton early this year and whilst I had a fascination for Dutch house at the time, this genre blew my mind. It was soo fresh and I was blown away. 'Finally' I thought ' Another genre of music, to fall in love with'. And boy do I love it. As a DJ it's not something that I am going to play out just yet - I think it's too young as a genre for the masses to understand. I think it's only going to take somebody like 'Chase and Status' to jump on the commercial band wagon. It's certainly going to happen and it's only a matter of time before we hear the first Moombahton record to hit the charts - Watch This Space! I never thought we would hear Dubstep hit the UK Top 10 like it has done....

Now I know both genres of music are at different ends of the spectrum but they are both mutants of sub genres of music. I wonder what will come next? maybe a fusion of both?... (Now that's an idea for the studio).
Both fascinate me and are inventions and evolutions that I think we'll look back on with pride in years to come, in the same way the generation of the late 80's and early 90s look back on with pride when house was born.
Dubstep has well and truly been embraced - there is no doubting it. You just have to look at the recent back catalogue of compilations that have pumped the chart and there is an endless list of Dubstep Albums. But while Dubstep is still enjoying it's growth stage in the product life cycle, I think Moombahton will sneak under the commercial radar and remain an underground genre for a long time to come. Maybe it'll fade away and a new mutant will be born that will make us forget and Dubstep and the genres that conceived it. But I like Moombahton and I can't wait to go to my first Moombahton rave so deep down I hope it avoids the commercial attention, I want it to remain exclusive and I don't want to hear Moombahton tremble from a Chavs car, like I do with Dubstep. I must say Moombahton is a lovely mutant and that's why I don't want it to become a commercial success. However I don't think I will love a mutant as much as I love House. It mutated from Disco and now it has many offspring. It has a large family that just keeps on growing. Mutant is such an ugly word. But I think it's a good word to use when describing music that evolves. House music is the most beautiful Mutant of them all.

My A-Z of Music Technology

A-Z Music Technology Glossary

Here is a basic A-Z glossary of music technology so that you can feel comfortable in this wonderful music technology world.

Music technology is a big technical subject that requires an understanding a wide range of words that you may not have heard anywhere else. You may just nod and smile politely at the sound engineer while he bamboozles you with his entire technical gobbledegook while you sit at the mixing desk with him. Do not be afraid of the language that the ‘so called’ professionals may use whilst trying to strike up a conversation about… well anything really.

A Arpeggiator
An Arpeggiator is a device that plays a sequence of notes based upon the input of the keyboard/synthesiser, commonly used in dance music production. Many arpegiattors can be programmed to play a sequence of notes over different octaves just by simply playing a chord or just one note.
Arpegiattors can appear in hardware or software devices: famous examples include the Roland Jupiter 4 and Reason 4’s RPG8 Monophonic Arpeggiator.

B Band Pass Filter
A Band Pass Filter is a filter that is used in the equalisation process to ‘pass’ or remove a band of frequencies. Frequencies outside of the band are attenuated while frequencies inside the band are enhanced.

C Cardioid
Cardioid is a pattern of sensitivity. A microphone with a cardioid pattern is said to have high sensitivity to sounds that are produced in front of it and low sensitivity to sounds produced behind it.  A cardioid pattern can easily be recognised as its shape resembles that of a love heart.

D De-Esser
A De-esser is a signal processor used to reduce the sibilance from a singer’s voice. Occasionally ‘ess’ and ‘shh’ sounds are produced by singers so a de-esser is used to reduce this sibilance.

E Equaliser
An equaliser is a device used for tonal enhancement. Equalisation can be used to make sounds sound ‘brighter’, ‘fuller’, ‘darker’ etc.
Parametric, Semi parametric, Graphic, Notch, Peak and Swept are all types of equalisers.

F Flutter Echo
A flutter echo is an easily recognisable ringing noise that echoes between two reflective, parallel surfaces. A flutter echo can easily be achieved through a loud hand clap in a small room.

G Gate
A gate is a term used in audio processing. A noise gate is used to control the volume of a signal. In essence a noise gate only allows a signal to pass through when it is above a certain threshold and it does not allow a signal through if it is below the threshold. Not to be confused with compression or limiting.

H Headroom
Headroom is the term used to describe the space between nominal signal level and the undistorted value. A signal will clip and distort if it goes above the headroom. On a mixing desk the nominal level is usually a green colour, headroom is usually a yellow/amber colour and the distorted signal appears as a red colour.

I Impedance
Impedance is a measurement of the opposition to the alternating current in a circuit. Impedance is usually specified on most mixing desks, speakers and amps.

J Jack Plug
A jack plug is also known as a TRS connector. It is commonly found on head phones and is available in three standard sizes: 2.5mm, 3.5 mm and ¼”. Mono Jacks and Stereo jacks are easily distinctive. Mono Jacks only have one ring around the tip while stereo jacks have two rings around the tip.

K Keyboard
Keyboards are commonly used in music production. A MIDI keyboard however does not produce sounds unlike a piano; instead a MIDI keyboard sends information to a device such a VST instrument which then interprets that information that produces the desired sound.

L Limiter
A limiter is a signal processor which cuts off a signal once it reaches a set threshold. In essence a limiter is a type of compression but with a very high ratio.

M Modulation
Modulation can be described as the process when the pitch of a tone rises and falls. Many MIDI Keyboards feature a modulation wheel and this can be used to create a wobbly sound when a set of keys have been programmed.

N Noise-reduction
Noise reduction is the process of removing unwanted noise from a given signal. An example of noise reduction would be removing the hiss from an old analogue recording. Noise reduction is commonly used in music restoration.

O Oscillator
Oscillators are used in synthesisers to create a waveform which can then be passed through an ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelope and an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) to create a particular sound.

P Parallel Compression
Parallel Compression is a technique used in mixing a production. Parallel compression can be used to make a drum track sound more dynamic. It is achieved by mixing an unprocessed signal with compressed version of the same signal.

Q Quantisation
Quantisation can be used to program notes that have been recorded into a sequencer. Quantisation is often used to rectify timing mistakes by using full bars, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64 notes. Over quantisation can create a robotic and artificial sound.

R Resonance
Resonance is a term used in acoustics. A resonant frequency is the natural frequency at which a material will vibrate. For example your body may start to vibrate (resonate) in a loud club due to the heavy bass.

S Side Chain Compression
Side Chain Compression is a type of dynamic range compression. Side Chain Compression is achieved by reducing the level of one signal with a different signal and it creates a ‘pumping’ sound.
Side Chain compression is commonly used in the production of French house.

T Total Harmonic Distortion
Total Harmonic Distortion is the measurement of difference between an input signal and an output signal of an amplifier. This THD is a specification usually found on amplifiers. It is measured as a percentage; the lower the percentage the more impressive the amplifier specification e.g. 0.003% Total Harmonic Distortion is better than 0.008% Total Harmonic Distortion.

U Ultrasonic
The hearing range of a young person is about 20Hz – 20 kHz. Frequencies that are produced over 20 kHz are known as ultrasonic frequencies.

V Vocoder
A vocoder is an audio processing effect that creates a robotic sound from a human voice. In essence a vocoder synthesises speech. Vocoders are commonly used in music production and vocoder examples can be heard in recent productions by Daft Punk, Madonna and Chromeo.

W Wavelength
A wavelength is one full cycle of a sound wave. It can be measured peak to peak. In physics the symbol λ is used to represent wavelength.

X XLR
XLR is a connection found on ‘industry-standard’ microphones. It is a three pin connector. XLR stands for X-tended Locking Round.

Y Y-lead
A Y-lead is a lead that feeds two different sources from one point. Y-leads commonly use jack plugs to connect to a destination. A Y-lead may be used to feed sound from an audio interface to a pair of speakers where two mono jack plugs would feed a right and left speaker, respectively.

Z Zenith
A Zenith is the perfect alignment between a tape and a tape head. It is when a tape and a tape head are making 100% contact with each other. When a tape and a tape head are not aligned correctly it can lead to a poor sound quality.

Wear Protection....

Wear Protection… Protect your ears

As a DJ, producer or music fan it is inevitable that at some time or another you will be exposed to loud music. After a long night raving, you may have experienced a ringing type noise in your ears. This is called tinnitus and this damage is irreversible. However, this damage can be prevented. You would not look directly at the sun for fear of losing your eye sight, so why expose your eyes to loud music and risk losing your hearing.

For aspiring DJs and Producers your ears will be your most valuable asset to establish and sustain a successful career.

Tinnitus noises may only be heard in one ear but it can be heard in both ears and sometimes it may feel as if it is coming from the centre of the head.
The ringing may come and go and in severe cases the ringing is ever present.

What is tinnitus?

In essence sound waves excite tiny hairs inside the cochlea (inner part of the ear) that send electrical impulses to the brain which then interprets this information as sound.

These tiny hairs are very sensitive and very delicate and are easily damaged when exposed to loud music over a long period of time.

When damaged these hairs, randomly send electrical information to the brain which interprets this corrupt information as sound even though there might be complete silence hence the constant ringing noise after a rave.

How to protect your ears

There are many ways to protect your ears from loud noises:
• Turn the volume down on your mp3 player
• When in a club, take regular breaks from the dance floor
• Pay attention to signs such as “Caution! Loud Noise Hazard, Ear protection must be worn”.
• Don’t try to be cool by standing next to the speakers in clubs
• Wear ear protection

There is a range of ear protection to choose from and investing in a set of ear plugs could prove to be a wise choose in the years to come.

Health experts recommend that exposure to noises above 85dB for prolong periods of time, ear protection must be worn to prevent irreversible damage.

Here is a loudness scale so that you can understand the decibel sounds around you and protect your ears.

dB      Level Level of Exposure           Common Noise Source
140    Deafening                                 Jet Engine 25m away
130    Deafening                                 Jet Engine 100m away
120    Deafening                                 Loud Club
110    Deafening                                 Jet Engine 600m away
100    Very                                         Loud Pneumatic drill
90      Very                                         Loud Food belnder
80      Loud                                        Police Siren
70      Loud                                        Vacuum Cleaner
60      Moderate                                  Busy Office
50      Moderate                                  Normal Conversation
40      Faint                                        Library
30      Faint                                        Whisper

Top 100 DJs

It's competition time again folks. It's that time of year again when all the Superstar DJs are reaching out for for their fans to vote for them in the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll.

Apparently you can make 'Your Hero Become A Legend' by voting.

No doubt you probably can make your Hero's become Legends. But is it really a true measurement of the best DJs of the world? Or is it just a popularity contest to see who can notch up the most votes? Now I'm not saying that I wouldn't want to be included in this list, it would surely add a few 0's to an invoice after a DJ gig. You could even  justify adding a few more 0's if you landed in the Top 10...  But what I'm trying to say is does it really reflect the best of the best?

I'm not sure it does. I know the great people at DJ Mag work hard to prevent random DJs such as Lemon and Thyme entering the chart and corrupting the competition but I think it's safe to say we can all make a pretty good educated guess as to who will be in the Top 5. I'm going for; Paul Van Dyk, David Guetta, Tiesto, Deadmau5 and Armin Van Burren ( I also predict that The SWH will be lurking around that part of the chart too...) and to be fair they all are, probably, the most popular DJs in the world right now but I struggle to understand why DJs such as Erick Morillo, Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez to name but a few do not and have not featured higher in the chart in recent years. I mean it's not as if they are short of support, these guys play to the masses every week in different Cities around the world and they hold residencies in the best clubs in the world too.
Pete Tong broadcasts the biggest dance music radio show in the world, so how come the people who listen to his show don't?
Maybe they share the same fans or maybe it's just for the simple fact that their fans cannot be bothered to vote. ( I don't want to ruin the banter but I do think Trance fans and Hard House fans are more loyal (it's a good thing) hence the lack of House DJs who finished in the Top 10 in last years Poll...)
If the vote was a real reflection of the DJ World than Bobina, Infected Mushroom and Dash Berlin would have the right to earn/charge more £'s per gig/performance than Pete Tong and Erick Morillo because they are 'better' but I don't think that they do. I'm not a promoter nor am I a nightclub owner - far from it to be exact but I would confidently say that they don't earn or charge more than the latter.

Sure it's a reflection of the most popular DJs in the world but it's not a reflection of the most talented DJs in the world. If you were to compose a mini league of all these DJs and make them battle each other and make them test their skills against each other the DJ Mag Top 100 would certainly look different. I know that would never happen in a million years but what the chart doesn't measure is talent, skill or ability. All you need to win is a good fan base and fairly good marketing team-it almost forgets the music. What I need to clarify before I go any further is that I am not saying that anyone featured in the Top 100 does not have talent. They sure as hell have talent. Without doubt. They have talent I could only wish for.

But I suppose what I'm trying to say is the competition should measure more than votes. I'd like to see more producers in the Top 100. I don't mean to offend producers who only produce and I don't mean to offend DJs who only DJ but if you look at last years result Top 10 rated DJs produce hit after hit. DJing and Producing goes hand in hand now - for me it's only natural to play your music if you make it and it's only natural to want to make music if you play music. And this is the main reason why I think the concept of the competition should change. I'm all up for having a competition like this because somebody has to be the best and why not be able to prove it but there should be more to it than just votes.
The Worlds Strongest Man competition isn't based on who people think is the Strongest. The Worlds Strongest Men compete with each other to see who is the Strongest.

I think there should be another competition for the Top 100 Dance producers, based on sales figures (and votes...). From this competition you would be able to measure it against the Top 100 DJs and if a DJ/Producer feature in both they should be entered in some sort of league called something like 'The Best of the Best' but not so cheesey and the higher the DJ features in the DJ Top 100 and the higher they feature in the Producer Top 100, the higher they feature in 'The Best of The Best' and by taking their average score from both competitions it would give you a new score for the league (still following?).
This would filter both polls and this would produce more of a 'realistic' view at who is the best. You would still be able to see who the best DJs are and you would still be able to see who the best at the game really are.

I'm still deciding whether or not to vote in this years DJ Mag Top 100 and I'm not sure who I would vote for but I know I have 28 Days, 4 Hours and 27 Min left if I want to.

For me it's like Brown Sauce, I'm not for it but I'm not against it.

Fair play to everyone that does vote and congratulations to every name that appears in the list.

What the Blog is really about...

From time to time you might get a glimpse at what's going on in my world, what my thoughts are about a particular related subject and I might share something with you that I think you might find interesting but hopefully this particular post will give you a taster about what this blog really is about.

It's about promoting Unsigned  Dance Music and Independent Artists. Yes I know the word 'Dance Music' is an umbrella for a lot of genres but I'm not prejudice. I welcome all types of music. See me as an eclectic but with a preference. To be honest and without sounding too cheesy I just want to share music with people and I just want to make people dance, and that's it. In whatever way I can, I will try to do that.

Joss Holmes, The mastermind behind Jagos Productions, is a good friend of this Blog and I idolise what he's doing right now.
Checkout his SoundCloud to get an understanding why I can't get enough of his music.

Internet radio is something that I'm going to look into in the future...

With regards to the Producers out there here's something you might want to get your teeth stuck into...

This is a perfect opportunity to flex those remixing skills

Sholanda is looking for amateur and pro remixers alike to help with a dance track currently at http://www.ratethisrecord.com/
Take a listen.
I'm sure there will be some weird and wonderful results from this.

As I will always be looking at ways of not only promoting my music but I will always be on the look out for ways to promote other peoples music. Here's a new website that can be used as another channel to promote your music, it's another platform and it's another way of getting your music out there to the masses.

Visit www.musicfast.com/

As a new artist, you can be sure your music will be hears. You will start out right away as being featured in the "New Artist Category" and will be placed in the front page rotation. This is a great opportunity to promote your music on a website that isn't cluttered with other groups, yet is poised for growth - what have you got to lose?

Today's post is short and sweet but hopefully you get the idea of what I'm trying to do and what this Blog is about.

I look forward to hearing and sharing all of your music!

August House Mix!

After a turbulent past few days I made a mix to channel my energy.
I uploaded the end result to SoundCloud. Download it and take a listen!

Anyway I'm off on my jollies where I shall be forgetting about life and indulging myself with Sun and Beer. I shall also be spending quality time with my i-pod.

All being well, normal service shall resume in the near future!

Current Mood: Sad

I remember reading this blog post that Dennis Ferrer wrote a few years back.
http://www.myspace.com/dennisferrer/blog/382650771

Today I know how he felt.
Somethings are just too personal to share on the Internet but today is one of the saddest days of my life. Today I lost my first love, a companion and most importantly my soul mate.
Death is part of life but for someone to go so suddenly makes you hurt like hell.

I'm glad it rained today because my tears were washed away. It was not rain. It was heaven crying. I was crying tears of sadness but I know the Angels were crying tears of joy because you are with them now.

I love you... Thanks for the memories.

Too many songs to dedicate to you but this ones for you.

Erick Morillo's 5 Minute Mini Mix

On the drive home from work, last Friday, I was reminded by Pete Tong to Listen Again to Erick Morillo's 5 Minute Mini Mix from Annie Macs radio show. Totally forgetting that he did a Mini mix for Annie Mac, I got a little excited and I could not wait to get back and listen. But maybe I got too excited.
After I 'listened again' I was disappointed. But I'm not trying to take anything away our Erick. I just feel that the mix lacked that pizazz that a mini mix should have, I feel it didn't have the energy to make me want to go raving - which was a shame because I love Erick Morillo. He never ceases to amaze me and I think he is one of the greatest DJs ever!
I know he's a busy man and he's far too important and probably worth too much money to revel in the honour of producing a mini mix for Annie Mac and her radio show and to be honest I doubt it was even him who produced the mix. And if it was, he probably produced it in the air flying around in his private jet.
I wanted to hear the energy that Erick Morillo puts in his sets. I wanted to be teased into going raving. I wanted the mix to make me cry because I wasn't in Ibiza. I wanted to the mix to make me want search the Internet for cheap flights to Ibiza but it didn't. It  just seemed like there was 8 bar clips of Ibiza 'classics' chop up and pasted together without anybody actually listening to the end product . Like I say it lacked the energy.

Ah well never mind.... I still love you Erick!
